โ›„ Keep warm this winter

As the nights get colder and the days shorter, we need to make sure we stay safe and warm this winter. This can mean getting the flu jab, preparing your car for winter and ensuring you are warm enough at home.

A new Warm Homes leaflet features guidance on how to combat the big chill and keep you and your family comfortable and healthy.

You can call the Warm Homes service on 0116 305 2524 or click on the 'Make a referral' button at the top of the First Contact Plus website.

๐Ÿ”Œ Naming our new e-vehicles

School-aged children have until Friday 6 December at 4.30pm to suggest names for our new electric vehicles.

A new street sweeper and converted bin lorry will have their new names on show as they make their way around the District leaving zero emissions.

The lucky winners will receive their own Lego replica vehicle and be part of Blaby District Council's drive to improve air quality.

๐Ÿ  Council Tax changes could reduce empty homes

A consultation has launched on proposed changes to Council Tax charges for empty homes in Blaby District.
Following changes in the law, we are proposing to charge:

  • A 100% Council Tax premium on properties that have been empty, unoccupied and substantially unfurnished for at least one year
  • A 200% Council Tax Premium for properties empty more than five years
  • A 300% Council Tax Premium for properties empty for more than 10 years
  • A 100% Council Tax premium for second homes
These measures aim to encourage owners to bring empty homes back into use and increase the housing options in the local market. There are currently around 472 empty homes in the District with a further 110 second homes, amid a local and national housing shortage.

We want your views before they are reviewed by Councillors in the new year. If proposals are agreed, they would come into effect in April 2026

The consultation is open until Monday 6 January 2025.

๐Ÿฅ— Food hygiene ratings

As we approach the festive season, many of us will be arranging meals with friends and family. We encourage you to look before you book, and ensure you know which businesses in the district are doing the best job of keeping on top of hygiene standards.

Here are the latest food hygiene ratings in the district:

Rated 5 - Hygiene standards are very good

  • Countesthorpe Bowling Club
  • Green Acres Childcare, Aston Flamville
  • NHS Stewart House, Narborough
  • Promise Childcare, Leicester Forest East
Rated 2 - Some improvement is necessary
  • Golden Orient, Glenfield
Rated 1 - Major improvement is necessary
  • Spice 45, Narborough

We complete many food inspections every year and the frequency of our visits depends on the potential risk to public health.

The time between inspections can be as short as six months for the highest risk businesses, to two years for lower risk businesses.

If you have concerns about any business that prepares or sells food you can report this on the Food Standards Authority website using the link below:
