๐Ÿš‰ Decision delayed on rail freight hub

The Secretary of State for Transport has said she is "minded to refuse consent" for the 662-acre Hinckley National Rail Freight Interchange (HNRFI) - but needs further information before making a final decision.

Louise Haigh MP, was due to give her verdict on the controversial scheme by Tuesday 10 September. This followed a review of the plans and subsequent recommendation from the Planning Inspectorate's Examination Authority.

However, Ms Haigh announced in the House of Commons she was delaying the decision until 10 March 2025.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Help determine Councillors' allowances

We're looking to appoint a new member to our Independent Remuneration Panel. The panel is made up of three members and typically meets twice a year to review the type and level of allowances payable to Councillors.

Panel members are responsible for making recommendations on an appropriate scheme of allowances for Councillors. They look at allowances paid by other Councils and public bodies, hear from our Councillors and senior officers and assess the roles and responsibilities of all members.

If you have strong links to the District, have the ability to analyse data and probe into complex issues and are interested in contributing, why not consider applying? The closing date is Monday 7 October.

๐Ÿƒ Big Tree Give-away update

Back in May we launched our 2024 Big Tree Give-away, giving local organisations the chance to request up to 15 saplings to create a small woodland area or orchard, thanks to funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

The initiative is just one of the ways we are progressing our ambition for the District to achieve net zero by 2050.

We can happily say 14 groups, including six schools, four Parish Councils, two community groups and two libraries, will soon be receiving their chosen trees.

It is hoped the planting will help boost biodiversity as well as going some way to cut carbon locally and provide a mini nature haven for both wildlife and people to enjoy.
